IF media reports are to be believed, many ex-SouthWales members of the National Union of Mineworkers will be brimful of tears regarding Arthur Scargill's attitude to retain use of his NUM London flat costing pounds 30,000 annually and his struggle to reinstate his concessionary fuel allowance.

As a former NUM member with 10 years' underground coal face production employment in the mines, and as a single man with no house ownership or rental, I never received even a bucketful of concessionary coal or allowances in lieu, while many officers under the NUM umbrella received this concession.
