Five years ago they were staring into the abyss of non-league athletics, but now Cardiff AAC's women's team is preparing to compete in Division One of the UK Women's League for the first time. On Sunday, the team, already promoted barring a complete disaster, made sure there would be no need for calculators by going to Liverpool and winning the final match, beating their main rivals - Glasgow - in the process to clinch the second promotion place.

And such is the strength in depth the squad has now, compared to five years ago, that even with the absence of middle distance pair Amanda Pritchard and Natalie Lewis, Cardiff led virtually from the first event.
