The majority of Iraqis detest the colonial occupation of their homeland and want it to end. Mr Rathbone (Viewpoints, Oct 22) claims that democracy is only possible in Iraq with the presence of 140,000 American troops - many Iraqis take the opposite view that genuine democracy is impossible while Iraq is occupied by foreign powers.
Their scepticism is justified - elections may take place in January, but will they be democratic? The US government has already declared that it will decide who can contest elections and will veto candidates who are not to their liking.See the full content of this document
