BRIDGEND AM Carwyn Jones last night launched an attack on Plaid Cymru's desire for Welsh independence as he prepared to launch his bid for the Welsh Labour leadership.

The Assembly's Counsel General is the bookmakers' favourite to succeed Rhodri Morgan as First Minister, but supporters of his opponents Huw Lewis and Edwina Hart have tried to portray him as sympathetic to the nationalists. Last night, Mr Jones attacked Plaid, Labour's coalition partner in Cardiff Bay, saying Welsh independence would be un-affordable and suggesting it would cut people off from friends and families.
