Q My sister is suffering quite badly at the moment with gallstones and her condition seems to have progressively worsened during the last few months. What has caused it and how can I avoid suffering in the same way? And what treatment should she be considering? A Gallstones are very common - roughly 10% of the population will be affected - and more often than not they simply pass from the body unnoticed. But in some cases they become more problematic and can cause quite a bit of pain.

Gallstones are small stones that form in the gallbladder and are usually made of cholesterol. The gallbladder itself is situated just under the liver and its job is to store bile - the liquid produced by the liver to aid fat digestion. Bile passes from the liver through a series of ducts and is stored to be released into the digestive system when required.
