I AM being chased up for a very old debt, and since I haven't the money to pay it off they are threatening me with the bailiffs. I have a lodger with me and am concerned that they will take his property. Can the bailiffs break into my house?
Has a County Court judgment been entered against you? It may not even be possible to commence legal proceedings if six years have passed since payment was first demanded and you have not, within those six years, admitted owing the money or made any repayments. But if a judgment has been entered and the court subsequently issued a "Warrant of Execution" instructing the bailiffs, then they may pay you a visit. They are not allowed to break in, but they can walk in through an unlocked door or climb through an open window.See the full content of this document
