Born in Abercynon, Roy John won three consecutive Welsh amateur titles from Dowlais ABC, before turning professional with manager Eddie Thomas in 1967.
He began at middleweight, losing on points in a challenge to Welsh champion Carl Thomas in Cardiff and then stepping up to light- heavy for the rest of his career. Mr John beat Johnny Frankham in a final eliminator for the British crown, but was outscored when he met the holder, former Olympic gold medallist Chris Finnegan, in 1973.See the full content of this document
