AMIDST the controversy over Cardiff council's plans to build the new English-medium secondary school for east Cardiff on the parkland of Llanrumney, there has been less discussion about the fate of the Eastern Leisure Centre.
The council plans now sit on the education minister's desk awaiting approval. The plans state that the Eastern Leisure Centre forms an integral role in the new school, although the council had to concede to residents that the Eastern Leisure Centre would remain a separate entity from the school. Has anything been earmarked in the council's budget to cover the same style of refurbishment at the Eastern Leisure Centre as was carried out at the Western Leisure Centre? Cardiff council has continually raised the spectre that if their plans are not approved the future of the centre could be thrown into doubt. Liberal Democrat Councillor Freda Salway, executive member for education and lifelong learning, stated in the Echo (January 19): "Our proposals also mean money can be provided for essential improvements at Eastern Leisure Centre without which the centre may eventually have to close."See the full content of this document
