Opponents at the centre of a controversial waste war they thought they had won are preparing to fight on as fresh fears were raised this week. When Caerphilly County Council recently announced it was planning to pull out of its long-term waste management contract with Biffa for a huge plant in the old St Ives building near Ystrad Mynach, campaigners were overjoyed.

But campaigner Tim Maddison, who has led the fight, warned at the time that the war was far from over. This week, his warning was echoed at a public meeting where the spectre of a waste transfer station at St Ives was still thought to be a live issue.
