Tony Blair's Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy was an easy winner in Torfaen but the Liberal Democrats put in another creditable performance. While Mr Murphy's vote at 20,472, and majority at 14,791, were both marginally down on 2001 the result still represented a good night for the Labour politician, who has held Torfaen since the 1987 General Election
The former Secretary of State for Wales won 56.90 per cent of the total vote - down from 62.1 per cent - with Conservative Nick Ramsay, a researcher at the National Assembly, holding on to second place by just three votes ahead of the Liberal Democrat councillor and teacher Veronica Watkins.See the full content of this document
