Summary

Tony Blair's Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy was an easy winner in Torfaen but the Liberal Democrats put in another creditable performance. The former Secretary of State for Wales won 56.90 per cent of the total vote - down from 62.1 per cent - with Conservative Nick Ramsay, a researcher at the National Assembly, holding on to second place by just three votes ahead of the Liberal Democrat councillor and teacher Veronica Watkins.
