I Can't Intervene in Incinerator Scheme, Says Minister

Summary

ENVIRONMENT Minister Jane Davidson has said she cannot intervene in the decision to grant planning permission for an incinerator in Cardiff. Ms Davidson said she had considered the application by Viridor to build an energy-from-waste plant in Splott, which was granted planning permission by Cardiff council, but had decided it did not meet the criteria to be called in by the Assembly.

Her decision means that if the Environment Agency grants the pounds 150m scheme an environmental permit Viridor can go ahead and build the facility, which would burn 350,000 tonnes of waste a year. Ms Davidson, whohas responsibility for planning, told Plaid AM Leanne Wood: "After consideration of the issues it was decided that the application did not raise issues which warranted taking responsibility for determining the application away from the local planning authority."
