Summary


Parents who take their children away during term time have blamed the rising cost of holidays for their actions. Mums and dads defended taking their children out of school after Chief Inspector of Schools Susan Lewis revealed there was a growing trend of family holidays being taken during term time because of the costs involved and work commitments.

Ms Lewis, who heads Wales' education inspectorate Estyn, said attendance rates in one third of secondary schools in Wales are not good enough.
