DEREK Hanlin's revelation that Gordon Brown paid pounds 14 for a pair of socks (Viewpoints, October 16) comes as, despite recent setbacks, many still think our new Prime Minister is a jolly good egg. However, as he amassed his personal fortune, Brown was responsible for decimating the nation's pension funds, creating scores of new taxes, fleecing ordinary hard working folk of every penny he could and don't forget, this was the good egg who also wanted to tax our conservatories, greenhouses, garden sheds and patios and more.

Is it any wonder then, that many disillusioned traditional Labour voters now see modern Labour socialism as a sham?
