ON THIS DAY 1901: Daredevil goes over Niagara Falls in a barrel - Anna Edson Taylor, aged 63, became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel. After climbing inside the air pressure was compressed with a bicycle pump. She was expecting fame and fortune but later died in poverty. October24 diplomatic relations following revelations of a plot to blow up an El Al airliner. Foreign secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe said in there was "conclusive evidence" of Syrian official involvement.
