April 24, 1947. Dawn breaks over Sker Point, Porthcawl. A police inspector follows an ominous trail of white paint, shattered beams and brass fittings across the rocks. It leads to an overturned lifeboat. A sight, 60 years ago today, to fill Wales with woe.

For this was the wreckage of the lifeboat Edward, Prince of Wales, crewed by men of Mumbles on a night of elemental fury, a night when the raging sea stole 49 lives.
