These days, being a street beggar would seem to be a lucrative pastime, offering opportunities to relieve the public of a few pounds with stories about having no bus fare to get home, or a story about destitution, which can be far removed from reality.

These days the art of street begging is not confined to the down and out man, sitting close to a cash machine, or on some street corner, but to those who appear well dressed and in good health, who see an opportunity to fleece some member of the public in the street for a few pounds.
