The Secrets of Scott's Hut

Summary

BBC Two Wales, tomorrow, 8pm He may have lost the race to the South Pole, but Captain Scott - who actually set out from Cardiff - has unquestionably become a hero to generations of Brits who have been enthralled by the 'Boy's Own' aspects of his story.

Even the fact that his expedition ultimately ended in tragedy only seems to have added to the romance. Ben Fogle is just one of the people who has been inspired by Scott's example, and here he gets to follow in his hero's footsteps by visiting the hut that served as the explorer's base between 1911 and 1912. The simple structure, which stands on the remote Cape Evans in Antarctica, has remained virtually untouched for a century and still contains some 10,000 artefacts left behind by his team. However, the extreme weather conditions have taken their toll on the hut, and Fogle and his intrepid team of conservationists are hoping to restore the building and its contents, without disturbing the past.
