There's Always Time to Be Green

Summary

Cardiff County Council has two all-year-round schemes, both of which include recycling Christmas trees. The Recycling Wheeled Bin Scheme, run by the waste management department, involves 20,000 homes. Trees and similar material are deposited at civic amenity sites through the city. The second, run by the parks services unit, involves collecting Christmas trees at various sites. The trees are composted for use in parks and playing fields.

Caerphilly County Borough Council had green waste skips at its amenity sites where Christmas trees could be deposited for recycling. The numbers were not monitored but the trees go to a local farmer for composting. The collection scheme runs throughout the year for trees and similar material. Rhondda Cynon Taf has run a Christmas tree recycling scheme for several years. Local residents are encouraged to deposit their trees at the designated spots. The trees are then chipped and used as compost.
