WITH the growing season reaching its height, may I through the pages of your paper urge your readers to think twice when thinking about buying peat to use on their gardens.

There are many sound environmental reasons why not to use peat. Firstly peat renews at approximately 1mm per year; therefore, it is considered a non-renewable resource. According to Defra, Britain has just 10% of its original pristine peat habitat left.
