THE wallpaper had been browned by years of smoke. Sepia pictures of soldiers - spiky helmets and Kaiser moustaches aplenty - peered down at me from grimy picture frames as I supped a wondrous local pilsner beer (half a litre for 75 pence!). I had that great time- warp feeling one would normally associate only with Madras or Casablanca.
