WELL, that time of year again, December 1 and the fabled, phoney battle to claim the Christmas No 1 hots up. Dunno why they bother.

Seems that this one hallowed spot is no longer decided on merit but by the wishes of the pop Svengali Mr Simon Cowell. So should we care? Especially when you remember that the most-covered seasonal song of all - yes, White Christmas - never made it to Christmas No 1. The closest it came was when Bing, who introduced it to the world in 1942, took it to No 5 in 1977.
