CARDIFF jail was plunged into crisis today as prison officers walked out in an illegal 24-hour strike. Inmates were locked in their cells, and contractors, delivery drivers, solicitors and inmates families turned away, as scores of angry staff protested against a controversial pay deal. Just after 10am today, three hours after the national strike officially began, up to 80 staff marched out of the 754-capacity prison and gathered in the car park. Earlier today the duty governor Hadyn Wilkins, said he was unaware there would be any strike action at the prison.: FROM PAGE 2: Prisoners left in cells as staff walk:Cardiff jail was plunged into crisis today as prison officers walked out in an illegal 24-hour strike. Inmates were locked in their cells while dozens of staff protested against a controversial pay deal. Prison Officers' Association branch secretary at the Knox Road prison Graham Dale who has been a prison officer for 26 years, said staff were very angry. "What's happened today is the result of a national ballot we held in July and August in which 80 per cent of prison officers said they wanted to take some form of industrial action, up to and including an all- out strike, which is what has happened today," he said.

"We have had a 99 per cent response from our staff in Cardiff and all that's left is a patrol staff and now it's up to the prison what they want to do.
